In
a rapidly changing regional and global economic environment, it
is vital for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to keep abreast of
current development issues. It is important for ADB to take the
lead in formulating appropriate responses to economic exigencies
and effectively assist its developing member countries (DMCs). ADB
needs to have at its disposal up-to-date information as well as
projections and forecasts for the medium term. One of the important
lessons learned from the Asian economic crisis (1997-1998)
is that availability of timely information will enable ADB to promote
a better understanding of development trends and the evolving policy
responses in the Asian and Pacific region. It is with this objective
in view that the Asian Economic Outlook (AEO) workshop was conceptualized
way back in 1989.

The
AEO workshop is designed to contribute to the Asian Development Outlook
(ADO), which is one of ADB's flagship publications; and to the ADB annual
report. Produced annually, the ADO has become a valuable source
of information on the recent economic performance and medium-term prospects
of ADB's DMCs in the Asian and Pacific region as well as the global
economy. The ADO theme chapters provide useful discussion of the different
policy and development issues confronting the DMCs. ADO is distributed
by the Oxford University Press annually, and about 3,000 copies are
sold commercially in addition to the complimentary copies distributed
by ADB.
